Recent articles have been widely circulated suggesting that research has suggested that “the coronavirus could be spread by air conditioning systems”. As with many stories like this in the media, a degree of caution should be taken with regard to the veracity or accuracy of the statements made. Air conditioning is often an easy scapegoat target when there is an outbreak of any kind.

Having said that, any airborne contaminants can be minimised, if not eliminated, by proper and effective filtration and regular cleaning and maintenance of the systems. A clean air conditioning system is an essential part of a healthy building and it is essential that any air conditioning system serving a building where confirmed cases have been diagnosed are sanitised in accordance with best practice, and that any buildings where no cases have been confirmed have their air conditioning and ventilation system’s cleaned to industry best practice as a preventative measure during this time and on-going.

Extraction and Fresh Air, Air Handling Units

Our experienced engineers specialise in the practice of Air Handling Unit Maintenance. Air Handling Units (AHU’s) supply and recirculate air throughout buildings. During operation, an Air Handling Unit draws in huge amounts of fresh air containing outdoor pollutants, therefore filters need replacing and coil chambers need cleaning on a regular basis to stay on top of the cleanliness. In line with each coil, there are a series of panel filters and bag filters that also require maintaining. The cooling coil’s within AHU’s produce condensation which increase’s the possibility of bacteria build up further adding to the need of regular maintenance. This poses an increased risk of serious breakouts of legionella bacteria. Therefore, Air Handling Unit Maintenance needs to be a critical item, for building management planned preventative maintenance works.

The integrity of the equipment is of utmost importance, so great care is taken when equipment is being dismantled. Components are packaged securely and delivered personally by our trained engineers to ensure no damage is caused during transportation.

Our engineers will then locate all components to the location where the unit is to be reassembled before completely reassembling the units.  

We will then pressure test, vacuum and charge the unit with the factory refrigerant charge ready for commissioning.
